The “Duplicate Content Penalty” Myth

Posted on 26 March 2010 by Rob Bromilow

Whilst working in the SEO industry for a few years, it has been common for the term “duplicate content penalty” to be banded about in SEO circles. Technically the phrase is inaccurate. There is no search engine penalty for duplicate content, however it is not something you should strive to have plenty of on your website.

As long as the internet has been around, duplicate content has existed and it is something that can’t really be avoided. This isn’t something to lose a lot of sleep over however. Your website won’t get penalised but search engines like Google will simply filter out the duplicate pages. “Filter” is the key word here. Search engines strive to index and show as much unique, relevant content as possible. It is their job to do this. Duplicate content is a problem for search engines but they deal with it by applying filters which attempt to remove any pages that display information they already know about.

An example of the filter is having similar content for two similar products on a site. You won’t get penalised for this however you may have to be content with the fact that only one of these products is shown by Google, the other being “filtered”.

100 Push-Ups

The 100 Push-Up Challenge

Posted on 09 March 2010 by Rob Bromilow

This week as part of getting fit for the 10k run in May I have started a 6 week push-up challenge. Basically you perform push-ups 3 times a week, in my case Thursday, Saturday and Monday each week. Last night I finished week 1 of the challenge. The aim of said challenge is to perform 100 good-form push-ups in one go – something that sounds impossible only in the first week. Before starting you are required to see how many you can do in one go – now bearing in mind I haven’t done push-ups since I was at university, I was a little rusty.

100 Push-Ups

100 Push-Ups

I managed a magnificent total of 18! Pathetic really, but the aim of this challenge is to improve that performance and get you to 100 – in just 6 weeks. This isn’t going to be easy. So I started week 1 last Thursday and the set I had to start with was (with a minute rest between each set) – 10, 12, 7, 7 and then at least 9. I managed this just about and was happy to have a break until Saturday. Saturday was day 2 – the set was 10, 12, 8, 8 and then at least 12. I nearly died at the end of this set and was glad to have another break. Day 3 was last night – the set was 11, 15, 9, 9 and then at least 13. This was an absolute killer if I’m honest. I literally couldn’t push my body weight up after the 10th push up on the last set.

I’ve got a break until Thursday now and my arms need the time to recover! All my weight isn’t good for them!

Top 10 United Songs

Posted on 03 March 2010 by Rob Bromilow

In no particular order, here are my favourite United songs at the moment:

I Want Curly Hair Too (to the tune of ‘Cant Take My Eyes Of You’ by Frankie Valli)

Oh, Owen Hargreaves,
You are the love of my life,
Oh Owen Hargreaves,
I’d let you shag my wife
Oh, Owen Hargreaves,
I want curly hair too…

Anderson-son-son (to the tune of ‘Agadoo’ by Black Lace)

Anderson, son, son
He’s better than Kleberson.
Anderson, son, son
Our midfield magician.
To the left, to the right,
To the samba beat tonight,
He is class with the brass
And he shits on Fabregas!

Park, Park, Wherever You May Be (to the tune of ‘Lord Of The Dance’)

Park, Park, wherever you may be,
You eat dogs in your home country!
It could be worse, you could be Scouse,
Eating rats in your council house!

You Are My Solskjaer (to the tune of ‘You Are My Sunshine’ )

You are my Solskjaer,
My Ole Solskjaer,
You make me happy,
When skies are grey.
Oh Alan Shearer,
Was f*cking dearer,
So please don’t take my Solskjaer away.

United Calypso

When they’re playing in your town,
Get yourself to that football ground;
Take a lesson come and see,
Football taught by Matt Busby.
Manchester, Manchester United;
A bunch of bouncing Busby Babes,
They deserve to be knighted….

We Are The Pride of All Europe (to the tune of ‘One Of Those Songs’)

We are just one of those teams,
That you see now and then;
We often score six,
But we seldom score ten,
We beat ‘em at home,
And we beat ‘em away,
We kill any b*stards,
That get in our way….
We are the pride of all Europe,
The cock of the North,
We hate the Scousers,
The Cockneys of course (and Leeds!);
We are United,
Without any doubt,
We are the Manchester boys, nah, nah, nah…..

The White Pele (to the tune of ‘Tom Hark’ by The Piranhas)

I saw my mate the other day,
He said to me, he’d seen the white Pele,
So I asked, “Who is he?”
He goes by the name of Wayne Rooney.
Wayne Rooney, Wayne Rooney, goes by the name of Wayne Rooney.

Glory, Glory, Man United (to the tune of ‘Glory, Glory Hallelujah’)

Glory, glory, Man United,
Glory, glory, Man United,
Glory, glory, Man United,
And the reds go marching on, on, on…

We Are The Busby Boys!

Hello, hello, we are the the Busby boys,
Hello, hello, we are the the Busby boys,
And if you are a city fan,
Surrender or you’ll die,
We all follow United.

Red Flag Flying High

We’ll never die, we’ll never die,
We’ll never die, we’ll never die,
We’ll keep the Red flag flying high,
‘Cos Man United will never die

You MUST Sign Up Now!

Posted on 02 March 2010 by Rob Bromilow

The Independent Manchester United Supporters Trust (or MUST for short) have released a statement today regarding the possible takeover with the “Red Knights” of Manchester United.

“Initially the Red Knight Group has effectively set a challenge to Manchester United supporters to demonstrate they wish to see an alternative ownership proposal developed.

“In the first instance supporters are being asked to do this simply by joining the free online membership of the Supporters Trust and swelling its ranks to an initial target of at least 100,000.

“It is also essential for a majority of two key groups, the Old Trafford Season Ticket holders and those with Executive facilities, to show their appetite for participation by joining the Must online campaign.”

The site now has 58,530 members and continues to grow. Please show your support by joining online here at MUST. I have joined and I hope that many more will join too. We want to get the Glazer’s out and have ownership by people who actually have money and aren’t taking anything from the club.
