Games Consoles – Which One?

Posted on 30 October 2009 by Rob Bromilow

Recently I have been wondering about getting a games console. I’ve never really been the type of person to sit and play on games consoles, even with a group of mates. I think I get too competitive and I seem to stop myself from getting too involved. With the option of online gaming and networking it all just seems a bit too geeky to me.  I much prefer going to the pub with mates and playing pool or playing 5-a-side.

In the past (from the age of about 11) I had a Nintendo 64. It was awesome. I never really wanted a Playstation (even though everyone had one and the games were supposedly better). The best game I ever played on, and it remains to this day was Zelda: The Ocarina of Time. What a game, so many challenges and things to explore. I stopped using my ’64 a few years ago when I bought an LCD TV. Now it seems that all things point to a new games console.

The question is, which one? I need one that can play DVDs (as I don’t have a DVD player). I need one that will be compatible for future games (I don’t want one that is good for about a year and then replaced). I am drawn to the XBox 360 Elite. It came out this summer and is considerably cheaper than a Playstation 3. I have always been a fan of Sony and actually prefer Apple to Microsoft so I am still unsure over which console to go for. I may end up not getting one at all, but then again it’s payday today, so who knows…

X Factor Lacking Talent

Posted on 29 October 2009 by Rob Bromilow

Having watched X Factor on and off for the last 5 years or so I find it amazing how many average sounding voices get through to the “finals”. They make such a big deal out of the “finalists on the live show”. Wow, we are all so impressed. This year the only acts that seem to have any talent are Danyl (what’s with the spelling) and Olly.

This video of Olly and Jamie performing an acoustic version of Cheryl Cole’s hugely popular “Fight for this Love” made me laugh. I have to say I have a soft spot for Lucie too, she did well last week on Big Band week and she has the good looks to match her performances. I would say her and Olly both have the chance to make it big for about 2 months and have a christmas comeback that no one cares about the year after.

This year there isn’t a stand out performer like Leona Lewis, she was concievably the best to have come out of the X Factor sausage factory. If you want to be successful in the music industry, history would suggest that X Factor isn’t the best way to do it. Internet sensation Esmée Denters and 18 year old Pixie Lott have made it big without the need of television audiences. X Factor provides good entertainment but this year the talent is certainly lacking.

Google and Facebook take on iTunes

Posted on 28 October 2009 by Rob Bromilow

With the news that Google and Facebook are reported to have agreed separate partnerships with online music streaming and digital store Lala, could iTunes have a fight on their hands? The move could put the internet heavyweights in competition with the likes of  Amazon, Spotify and of course Apple’s iTunes.

Users can listen to any of the songs that are part of its extensive library for free once, after which they can opt to buy a streamed version of the song for an MP3 download. Spotify is another online music service where users can stream music on demand for free or if they wish, purchase the songs in a similar way to iTunes.

Supposedly the facebook deal will see the social network offer the service to its users, getting 30% of revenues generated. Rumours of a second deal with Google could be announced next week. The deal would see Google searches displaying a widget in the results that lets the user stream the full song.

With the success of YouTube streaming music videos online for free there still seems to be a large share of the market wanting music on demand, and they are apparently willing to pay for it. With the imminent link up between Google, Facebook and Lala could this see the price of online music drop? I hope so!

Optimising Content for the Web

Posted on 27 October 2009 by Rob Bromilow

When looking at the optimisation of a website, content is king. More importantly quality content is king. If you are targeting a particular phrase to gain traffic from then it is important to not only mention this phrase in the title and description of your page but also in the content. Make the phrase a heading (h1) so Google can see it is relevant and also make it appear at least twice in the paragraph you are writing.

So if I was looking to optimise for “search engine optimisation blog” I would make it bold like this -  search engine optimisation blog and then also ensure that it had a link to show relevance e.g search engine optimisation blog. Keyword density is also a factor in content, how often you mention a phrase so that it is not too ‘spammy’. It has to read well but also be relevant for what you are trying to achieve or promote.
